No Nonsense SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

We published our first website on March 2nd 2001. Later in that year we came across the term SEO or Search Engine Optimisation. This was the start of an exciting journey which continues at a pace right up to now.

Since that start some 8 years ago we’ve created around 150 websites of our own, the vast majority of which were designed to take advantage of SEO systems and techniques.

What is SEO?

SEO is a process geared towards driving free yet highly targeted traffic to a website using the power of keyword searches. Over the years SEO has spawned many self-styled experts and its fair share of dubious practitioners. Today SEO is no longer as easy as it used to be. The fundamentals remain important however and probably always will.

The days when keyword stuffing, meta tags and hidden text SEO strategies have long gone.

Modern SEO is about thorough implementation of specific methodologies not as a self standing strategy but as part of a much larger internet marketing strategy. For most commercial ventures it is not a matter of SEO or PPC or eMail marketing. All 3 of these online marketing components have to be welded together to form a complete strategy.

The common denominator in all 3 is the absolute need to identify and then satisfy customer needs at the individual level at an instant in time.

The Future of SEO…

The future of SEO is not about discovering sophisticated techniques designed to engineer results it is about driving relevant traffic to a website… and then converting that traffic to sales..

This means that first and foremost any SEO strategy that stands a chance of working longer term must be created around the provision of good useful content relevant to the searcher’s queries and the organisations’ offerings. These are the fundamentals of modern SEO.

Content Creation

Website content is a fundamental pre-requisite for any type of success using SEO techniques to gather large volumes of "free" traffic from Google and other search engines. It should be the aim of any website owner to create many  targeted web pages that represent the complete portfolio of products or services. It would not be unusual in the slightest to count these pages in their hundreds maybe thousands.

It isn't possible to describe the business of any organisation within a few pages of content in such a way that the web page(s) will be found by the large numbers of people looking for the services or products offered by an organisation.

The publishing of a website should not be held back until all the pages have been created. The pages of content should be added to a website over time and the process should never stop. Almost anything and everything published by an organisation should find its way onto an established website.

Content creation is expensive in terms of time and is a window through which potential customers view and judge an organisation's standing on the Internet. Thus content creation is not done purely to improve the chances of higher search rankings on Google.

Except in very rare cases we don't create content except for ourselves. However we have established relationships with world leading organisations who specialise in this aspect of SEO. Content is so important that its creation cannot be left to casual creators of content or those parties in other non-english speaking countries who often lack the writing skills despite their good intentions.

It is not just about the actual writing. Content creations requires topic research and content structure to satisfy both the reader and search engines. and to fit the culture and image of the organisation.

Link Building

Link building is the most important component of SEO success. This is especially true in competitive markets such as travel, health and wellness etc.

It is believed that between 80% and 90% of Google's ranking algorithm is biased towards links and their structure.

It is difficult to build up a large portfolio of valuable incoming links. Gathering such links takes a considerable period of time and expertise and its cost is measured in the amount of time taken. Link building is difficult and boring work.

We used to build our own link structures but the task became so cumbersome and thankless that we started to use 3rd parties.

We outsource link building to organisations abroad who are skilled in such SEO requirements. These organisations have already established themselves in the link building business and as such are able to offer cost effective services. The same organisations also have the capacity and expertise to handle large workloads.

The ideal parties to use for link building are those who specialise in both link building and content creation since these processes work in conjunction with each other and are the essence of real SEO.

eMail Marketing

A major objective of any online marketing strategy must be to capture email information wherever possible from visitors to a web site.

It is a well recognized fact that marketing to email lists having trust in the email distributor often works better in terms of customer conversion to sales. This is especially so for higher cost items and valuable information products such as training systems, workshops and the like.

However as in the case of SEO and PPC it is not about collecting email addresses for the sake of it. Information gathered this way is only useful if it is relevant to the organisations’ offerings and the customers’ needs.
