Buying and Selling Online: Paypal and Esellerate

There was an article in today's paper suggesting "quite strongly" that FNB were about to enter into a deal with PayPal to launch the service in South Africa.

For years it's been possible for South Africans to open a PayPal account to buy products online but it was not possible to sell products online using the PayPal account. The reason was associated with Exchange control regulations and probably other concerns.

For online merchants being able to accept Paypal as a payment mechanism has enormous advantages. Here's why:

Selling Digital Products Online... Esellerate

I'm often asked the question :"How can I sell my ebook or software product online to a worldwide audience and get paid in South Africa"?

Since 2002 I have used the services of Esellerate. This is an USA based organisation who make it possible for anybody anywhere to open an online store and sell in a very wide range of currencies including South African rands.

Esellerate have processed almost R5 million of sales of my PDF books since 2002 and have sent my payment monthly by electronic transfer as regularly as clockwork. The only cost of the service is a 10% (sometimes a bit more) fee on the value of products sold. There are no set up fees at all.

The 10% also includes all credit card processing fees and all the backend work is performed by Esellerate.

All the download technicalities are also handled by Esellerate making it a breeze for non-tech people to sell online. You can easily be up and running in less than a day. I have rarely needed to contact them for any kind of support.

Setting up the digital store is easy and the complexities of payment gateways are completely avoided.
