A missing ingredient in the use of the Internet and especially in South Africa is to fail to understand the ROBO (research online buy offline) concept. Most people looking to buy using the Internet do NOT buy online. They research and compare and find online. They then make a choice as to where to buy OFFLINE.
If a merchant is not online then they will certainly not be up for possible review and or selection against competing merchants.
Competition between merchants (online and offline) to sell products and services will intensify enormously. In the USA and other highly developed online markets many sales are made not by merchants directly but by affiliates of the merchants. These affiliates work on a commission basis only. The opportunity for any merchant is to get more traffic than competitors. This means getting found by consumers who are specifically looking for products and services.
Once again looking at the “luggage Bedfordview” example it should be obvious that if one of the 5 merchants is located on Google search and none of the others are then that merchant has a distinct advantage and an opportunity to make a sale. Under this circumstance and if prices are competitive and an enquiry response is flexible, helpful and positive then the merchant can be pretty sure of making the sale.
For a merchant to be able to have a dominant position within Google search it’s imperative that the merchant either learns and implements the systems and methodologies to do better than any other competitor or uses the skills of 3rd party service providers (Internet Marketing experts) to achieve the same objective.
Most business owners will probably adopt this approach in view of the complexities and time involved. However in the hands of expert search marketers the cost of such services on a cost value basis is small yet of significant value to the merchant..
